Domain names are charged annually and are usually cost from as low as $5 (Rs.220 apx) to $30(Rs.1320) per annum.

If you are decided to buy a domain name, you can go on and read the rest of the article. You need to spend lot of time online searching for good and cheap domain name compnay. Don’t worry, I will provide few good webhost/domain company names at bottom of this articles.

All domain name registrars should be accredited by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), otherwise they can’t sell the domain names. Dont buy a domains from domain company which is non-approved by ICANN organization.

Generally, domain name is mapped to ip address (e.g. 127.0.0.1) and inturn this ip address is mapped to a physical computer location. So, every domain name is mapped to ip address on the internet.

More than one domain can be mapped to single ip address.

Below is the example for domain names
www.greenarticle.com or www.studywell.info
here, greenarticle and studywell is the domains names, and these must be unique on the internet.
.com, .info are the top level domains. Later, I will talk more on top level, second level and lower level domains.

Domain name servers resolve the domain names to ip addresses using domain name system mechanism. To make you understand simple, follow the below explanation

  • Every domain name is associated with atleast one domain name server
  • e.g. greenarticle.com is linked to some.nameserver.com ( name server are invisible to user, but domain owner can see and modify it)
  • when user make a request to www.greenarticle.com, request will go to some.namerserver.com name server
  • this name server knows which ip adderss the domain name is mapped to
  • Finally, the request is forwarded to the ip address where webpages are saved
  • And then browser will download webpages from ip address and dispalyed to user.
